Rain Gutters

Rain gutters, which run along the base of the roof, do more than keep downpours from drenching people as they come and go. By channeling water out and away from your home’s foundation, rain gutters reduce the risks of a flooded basement or damaged siding and minimize erosion and harm to your landscaping.

What’s more, folks hoping to conserve water can direct runoff from rain gutters into a rain barrel to serve as a reservoir for the garden.

Granted, rain gutters aren’t exactly glamorous, but they handle a critical task: routing the runoff from a very large surface—your roof—to proper drainage away from the house. By doing this, they keep your house high and dry, protecting siding, windows, doors, and foundation from water damage.

Though most rain gutters are installed on existing roofs, adding them during re-roofing simplifies installation and allows them to be fully integrated into the roof system. If you’re thinking about installing a new roof, your timing couldn’t be better and we can manage both!

Of course, rain gutters aren’t necessary for every house. Broad overhangs may cast runoff well away from a house, where proper grading and drainage can carry it safely away. So let Roof Boys take a look and determine what type of gutter installation is needed for your home.

K-Style Rain Gutters

K-Style gutters are the most common type for homes built within the past 50 years, though many owners of older homes still install them today.

Thanks to the flat back of K-Style gutters, you can nail it directly to the fascia board, no exterior brackets required. But what really makes K-Style gutters so popular is the typically decorative front side, which generally resembles crown molding.

Thanks to their flat bottoms and straight, outwardly angled sides, K-Style gutters usually can carry more water than half-round gutters, so they’re especially suited for rainy climates.

The term K-Style gutters is derived from the profile of this type of guttering when viewed from the side. The outer shape of the gutter is supposed to (very vaguely) represent the letter K, as opposed to a perfectly-rounded, half-circle-shaped gutter. In other words, the outer edge consists of a short, straight line from the bottom of the gutter, then two opposing curves, followed by another short straight line. These gutters are also known as ogee gutters (interestingly, the word “ogee” means “double curve,” which looks more like the letter S.)

Seamless Gutters

Seamless gutters, today’s most popular type of professionally installed gutter, are extruded from metal “coil” stock, using a special machine that’s brought to your home by a gutter fabricator. Gutters of nearly any length can be made by this machine.

As the name implies, seamless gutters do not have potentially leaky seams along their lengths, which is their biggest selling point. The extra-long troughs are mounted along the eaves and joined at corners—both inside and outside—using special connecting components and downspout outlets.

Seamless gutters, also known as continuous gutters, seamless gutters are manufactured from a single piece of material. They have not been partitioned into sections and, therefore, do not require any sealing at the joints or seams. This makes them long-lasting, leak-resistant and low maintenance compared to regular gutters. Seamless gutters come in a variety of standard gutter materials, including aluminum, steel and copper.

FAQS FOR GUTTER INSTALLATION

Gutters clogged with everything from leaves to twigs can cause expensive and dangerous home repair nightmares. Rainwater washing over your gutters can accumulate in pools around walls and foundations. This can result in leaky and cracked foundations or flooded basements. The right gutters prevent leaves, twigs, acorns, or other debris from collecting in your gutters allowing the water to run smoothly through the gutter and away from your home. Also keeping water from seeping down your home’s exterior and in winter they help prevent ice build ups on roofs.

  • Clogged or leaky gutters are one of the biggest causes of basement leaks, mold and other foundation problems. Also, standing water in gutters is one of the common places mosquitoes breed.
  • Old worn-out gutters are unappealing and reduce the value of your property.
  • Your old gutters may have become bent or dented or may be pulling away from your home in a manner that they cannot be reattached or reworked.
  • Your old seamed gutters may have begun to pull apart or have leaks and you would like to replace them.
  • You want to change the color of your gutters.
If during a rainfall, you can hear the water slapping the ground, pouring over the sides of the gutter, there may be a blockage or the gutter itself may not be aligned evenly. If you notice paint peeling or corroded wood, the gutter is most likely clogged and is causing the water to overflow and run down the back of gutter along the exterior walls of the house. If you notice mold or if you see puddles of water forming around the outside of your house it’s a sure sign that there are drainage problems.
Yes. Most gutters come in several shapes and sizes called profiles. These include U-shape as well as K-shape configurations. In K-shape configurations the ogee-shaped front looks like the letter K allowing the system to have more of a crown molding look rather than a boxy appearance. Most common being the K-shape.
Certainly, if you are a regular do-it-yourselfer and are comfortable on a ladder, you can install sectional gutters, but you’ll need a qualified professional to install seamless gutters.
